Huascarán Camp 1: Where Silence Becomes Vast
Conquering Huascarán is every mountaineer’s dream, but few know that its Camp 1 is, in itself, one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Cordillera Blanca. Located on a massive ice platform between the two summits (North and South), this place offers a perspective that photos can’t capture: the sound of the shifting glacier, the frigid yet purifying air, and the sight of a sea of mountains stretching to the horizon. At Andina Travel Peru, we’ve transformed this professional approach route into a unique adventure experience. It’s not just about hiking; it’s about experiencing the logistics of a world-class expedition, with porters, high-altitude cooks, and guides who have summited the “Roof of Peru” dozens of times.Itinerary
Our journey begins early in Huaraz. We’ll travel north, crossing the Callejón de Huaylas, until we reach the picturesque village of Musho. This is the point of no return, where civilization is left behind. Here we’ll meet our muleteers and donkeys, who will carry the heavy equipment so you can focus on your breathing and the ever-changing landscape.
The ascent to Base Camp is a magical transition from eucalyptus forests to high Andean grasslands. After about 5 to 6 hours of hiking, we’ll reach the vicinity of the Don Bosco Refuge (4,670m). We’ll set up our base camp under the imposing shadow of Huascarán’s west face. The afternoon is dedicated to acclimatization and a safety briefing, while we enjoy a sunset that paints the upper glaciers orange.
After a hearty breakfast prepared by our mountain cook, we’ll begin the most exciting part of the day. We’ll leave the marked trail and enter the glacier’s moraine. This is a labyrinth of rocks polished by ice that demands balance and focus.
Upon reaching the glacier’s tongue, we’ll perform the gear ritual: mountaineering boots, crampons, and rope-up. Under the guidance of your UIAGM instructor, you’ll begin walking on the Huascarán Glacier. Each step takes you higher above the clouds until you reach Camp 1 (5,300m). Setting up a tent at this altitude, surrounded by endless white and with the south summit watching over you from above, is an experience that redefines the concept of “adventure.” The night here is a spectacle of stars and absolute silence.
Waking up at 5,300 meters is something you’ll remember for a lifetime. After capturing the first light of dawn over the glaciers, we’ll begin our descent. Returning along the same path allows us to appreciate details of the moraine that we missed on the ascent.
We’ll descend steadily towards Musho, where our lungs will thank us for the denser, warmer air. Our private transport will be waiting to take us back to Huaraz. Upon arrival, you won’t just have completed a tour; you’ll have experienced the mystique of Peru’s highest mountain in the most authentic way possible.
