Vallunaraju: The Ice Giant at the Gates of Huaraz
Located in the Llaca Valley, Nevado Vallunaraju is much more than an acclimatization peak; it’s a high-altitude challenge with its own unique character. Its Quechua name means “snowy mountain of the slopes” or “snowy mountain that one can desire,” and it lives up to its accessibility and beauty. Unlike other snow-capped peaks that require days of approach, Vallunaraju allows mountaineers to be on the glacier in a matter of hours after leaving Huaraz. However, it shouldn’t be underestimated: its ascent demands good physical condition and mastery of basic cramponing techniques. For Andina Travel Peru, Vallunaraju is the mountain where alpine dreams are born, offering an unparalleled learning environment surrounded by giants like Ranrapalca and Ocshapalca.Itinerary
Our expedition begins with a pickup from your hotel for an exciting 4×4 ride to the Llaca Valley. This valley is famous for its vertical granite walls, a favorite among rock climbers. The journey takes approximately two hours and drops us off at the foot of Llaca Lagoon.
From here, we’ll begin our ascent to Moraine Camp. The trail zigzags through rocks and high-Andean vegetation, offering spectacular views of the hanging glacier of Nevado Ocshapalca. After about three hours of steady effort, we’ll reach our camp at 4,800 meters. We’ll set up our expedition tents on a privileged rocky platform. The afternoon is dedicated to hydration, rest, and a briefing on the use of ice climbing equipment, as the sun sets behind the Cordillera Negra, painting the glacier in shades of violet.
The day of glory begins at 2:00 a.m. After a light and hearty breakfast, we’ll equip ourselves with crampons, harnesses, and ice axes by the light of our headlamps. The first section crosses the upper moraine to reach the glacier’s tongue. Once roped up, we’ll begin our ascent across the eternal ice of Vallunaraju.
The climb is steady, overcoming snow slopes and navigating some aesthetic crevasses. The highlight comes when the sun begins to illuminate the faces of the region’s highest peaks: Huantsán and Ranrapalca seem to come alive. After 5 to 6 hours of climbing, we’ll reach the summit of Vallunaraju (5,686 m). From here, the view of the city of Huaraz, thousands of meters below, and the endless chain of snow-capped mountains is indescribable. After the obligatory photos, we will begin the descent towards Moraine Camp to collect the equipment and finally go down to the transport point to return to Huaraz, arriving around 4:00 p.m.
