Itinerary
We will depart from Huaraz at 4:00 a.m. in our private transport. First, we will travel to Chiquián and the picturesque village of Pocpa. Then, we will begin the ascent to Cacanapunta Pass (4,800m). From this natural viewpoint, you will contemplate the unique Pucacocha Lagoon and its reddish waters. Finally, we will descend to our campsite at Mitucocha. There, you will enjoy a hot dinner under the Andean stars.
After breakfast, we will hike to Carhuac Pass (4,650m). This 3-hour ascent offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the mountain range. Afterward, we will descend to Carhuacocha Lagoon. This place is considered the most iconic campsite in the world. You will pitch your tent facing imposing 6,000-meter snow-capped peaks. Without a doubt, this landscape is perfect for capturing spectacular photographs.
We will dedicate the third day to enjoying the tranquility of Carhuacocha. After breakfast, we will take a gentle hike to appreciate the mountain’s reflections in the water. This active break will help you acclimatize for the higher altitudes ahead. You will also learn more about the local geography thanks to the guide’s explanations. We will use the afternoon to rest and prepare our equipment for the major crossing the following day.
We will depart very early to conquer Cuyoc Pass (5,000m). This is one of the highest and most exciting points of the route. From the summit, the view extends even to the Raura Range on clear days. After enjoying the summit, we will begin our descent to Cuyoc Pampa. The 12 km trek will allow you to witness the dramatic change from glacial terrain to alpine valley. Finally, we’ll rest in a truly high-mountain environment.
This day represents the visual climax of the expedition. We will ascend to the San Antonio Viewpoint (5,000 m). From there, an extraordinary view of glacial lakes and towering mountains unfolds. Afterward, we will begin a long descent through the Calinca Valley. You will notice how the vegetation increases as we approach the village of Huayllapa. This 18 km day is intense but rewarding.
After our last breakfast on the mountain, we will organize the equipment for the return journey. You will say goodbye to the muleteers and the local staff. Then, we will board our transport to once again traverse the Andean landscapes. Along the way, you will reminisce about the moments experienced at the high passes.
