Ichic Ulta: The Crystal Challenge on Punta Olímpica
When we talk about mountaineering in Huaraz, the name Punta Olímpica resonates as a landmark of engineering and nature. It is here, in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca, that Nevado Ichic Ulta is located. Unlike other nearby peaks, Ichic Ulta offers a unique combination of road accessibility and a technical glacier that will make you feel like a true mountaineer from your very first step on the ice.Why choose Nevado Ichic Ulta?
This mountain is perfect for two reasons: scenic beauty and technical learning. Upon reaching its minor summit, climbers are rewarded with a panoramic view of Peru’s highest road winding through glaciers. It is the perfect place to practice using ice axes and crampons on moderate slopes, surrounded by a silence found only above 5,000 meters.Itinerary
Our expedition begins in the early morning. Andina Travel’s private transportation will pick you up at your hotel to begin the journey to the central area of the Cordillera Blanca. We will pass through the towns of Carhuaz and Shilla before winding through the Ulta Valley. The starry Andean sky will accompany us as we gain altitude.
We will arrive at the Punta Olímpica sector (4,700m), near the highest trans-Andean tunnel in the world. Here we will make a brief stop to check our equipment, hydrate, and begin the trek. The air is cold, and the landscape is purely glacial.
We begin an approximately 3-hour hike across moraine terrain. This section requires balance and rhythm, as we will walk over granite boulders until we reach the glacier’s tongue. As dawn breaks, the peaks of Contrahierbas and Ulta are illuminated with golden hues, a spectacle that only mountaineers have the privilege of witnessing.
Upon reaching the glacier, the official UIAGM guide will conduct a safety inspection. We will equip ourselves with mountaineering boots, crampons, harnesses, and helmets. We will rope up for safe progress. The ascent to the lower summit takes about 3 hours, overcoming snow slopes and navigating the crystalline ice that gives the mountain its name.
Victory! We will reach the summit of Nevado Ichic Ulta. Being here, at 5,250 meters, is a feeling of absolute freedom. You’ll have plenty of time to hydrate, enjoy your boxed lunch, and capture breathtaking photos of the Belaunde and Cancarará lagoons, which shimmer like turquoise jewels beneath your feet.
We begin our descent along the same route, maintaining focus with every step. After crossing the moraine, our private transportation will be waiting for the return trip. We’ll arrive in Huaraz around 5:30 PM, satisfied to have conquered an ice giant in a single day.
