When we think about climbing a snow-capped peak in the Cordillera Blanca, we often imagine long approach hikes and freezing nights in base camps. However, Nevado Huarapasca breaks this mold. Located in the southern part of the mountain range, near the route leading to the famous Pastoruri Glacier, this peak allows climbers to go from the city of Huaraz to the vertical face of the ice in a matter of hours.A Less Crowded Mountain Setting
Unlike snow-capped peaks such as Pisco or Mateo, Huarapasca maintains an air of exclusivity. It is the mountain of choice for those in the know who seek a summit with a technical challenge (climbing snow faces of 45° to 60°) but with the simplified logistics of a day tour. From its summit, the view is a canvas of snow-capped peaks, highlighting the presence of the Huascarán massif in the distance and the peaks of the Huayhuash range on clear days.Itinerary
Our day begins very early. Andina Travel’s private transportation will pick you up at your hotel to begin the journey south through the Callejón de Huaylas. We will pass through traditional villages like Recuay and Tica Pampa before arriving in Catac. At this point, we will take the turnoff to the east, entering the territory of Huascarán National Park.
We will arrive at the park checkpoint, where we will complete the mandatory registration. The route offers spectacular views of the Puya Raimondi, the tallest plant in the Andes. We will continue ascending in the vehicle to approximately 4,800 meters (14,000 feet), where the air feels cold and thin, and the imposing Huarapasca Mountain appears with its white mantle.
We begin our approach hike. For approximately one hour, we will traverse moraine terrain (glacial rock and sand). It is a short but demanding section. Upon reaching the base of the glacier, we will pause for the equipment preparation. Under the supervision of our UIAGM-certified guide, you will put on your mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, and helmet. We will rope up and give a brief technical refresher on the use of the ice axe.
Climbing Huarapasca is exhilarating from the very first meter. We will begin the ascent up the glacier, navigating some small crevasses and facing slopes that can reach 50° or 60° incline. This is where adrenaline combines with physical exertion. The sensation of digging your crampons into the firm ice while the sun shines on the mountain range is unparalleled.
You did it! Reaching the summit of Nevado Huarapasca is a personal victory. We’ll spend a reasonable amount of time at the top. It’s time to hydrate with a hot tea, enjoy your boxed lunch, and, of course, capture the photos that will immortalize this feat. The 360-degree view will allow you to appreciate the magnitude of Peru’s glaciers and the fragility of these ecosystems.
We begin the descent with utmost caution, using roped rappelling techniques. Once back at the vehicle, we’ll begin the return journey. The satisfaction of a job well done will accompany you during the 2.5-hour drive to Huaraz, arriving around 6:00 PM, just in time for a restorative dinner in the city.

Recommendations
Since this is a one-day tour, efficient packing is key. We recommend a 40-liter backpack with the following:
- Base Layer: Thermal underwear (T-shirt and long pants) made of synthetic material or merino wool.
- Second Layer: Fleece or thermal jacket.
- Third Layer: Waterproof jacket and pants (like Gore-Tex) to protect you from wind and moisture.
- Sun Protection: Sunglasses with UV protection (category 3 or 4), SPF 50+ sunscreen, and lip balm.
- Lighting: Headlamp with charged batteries (for safety).
- Hydration: At least 2 liters of water or sports drinks.
- Energy: Extra nuts, chocolate, or energy bars.
